Yes, more quickie character portraits. Meet Dr. M.

"Even by the Fleet's notoriously lax standards with regards to diagnosing psychological threats, Dr. M has been termed "dangerously unstable." His psychological profile reveals that he is a sociopath with a mildly paranoid personality and behavioral anomalies.

Dr. M came to the Fleet under unusual circumstances. He was remotely detected as being a dimensional twin of Pavel Antipov and when a team was dispatched for his retrieval Dr. M was found standing in the middle of a giant plain of ice with no food or shelter anywhere around him for miles and miles. No one knows how Dr. M came to be on the Ice Plain and he himself has never revealed it. He gave his name only as Dr. M; when he was registered into the Fleet database and asked for a first name he replied cryptically, "I think perhaps Jonathan."

His genius in all things medical and scientific was immediately noticed, but Dr. M possesses a far rarer gift than mere science. He is capable of passing any lie detector test no matter what he is saying and no truth serum has been discovered that works on him. He was partnered with his dimensional twin and the two became infiltration agents. They were excellent field agents for seven years until it was determined that their dimensional matrices could endure the modification required for fieldwork no longer. Then they were appointed to the leadership of the Intelligence division, Antipov as the director and Dr. M as Deputy Director, later changed to Sub-Director. Dr. M and Pavel Antipov remain two of the most highly-decorated Intelligence officers of all time.

One advantage to this retirement was that Dr. M is now free to conduct his medical and scientific research. He is the head of a branch of the Medical Division that, according to all records, does not exist. He is known for performing experiments of an extremely illegal nature, but then his imaginary department is immune from legal jurisdiction by the order of the Supreme Commander.

Dr. M has a nervous, halting mannerism. He always sounds as if he is out of breath and his hand motions are sudden, jerky. He has a strange accent which cannot be identified and speaks fluent English, Russian, German, Italian, and French, all strangely accented. He can also read Chinese (though not speak it). He has no friends besides Pavel and, more recently, Verine and Mitrovica. He is physically small, a tad shy of 5' 6" and extremely thin and light, with a round face that is eternally boyish. He has been physically compared to Radar O'Reilly (but don't do it in his presence because he despises the comparison). His hair is usually light brown, but randomly turns completely white for no apparent reason. It always changes back, but never seems to actually grow. He is always found wearing either a concealing white lab coat or the red uniform of a combat intelligence officer. His behavior is strange and erratic; he can go days without saying anything to anyone and then suddenly begin talking to people who aren't there. Pavel Antipov remains to this day the only person capable of dealing with Dr. M for extended periods of time.

Dr. M was nicknamed Dr. Death for his high kill rate and unique methods in the field. He developed several poisons that were completely undetectable to the enemy and delivered them without being caught or even suspected. He's also known to have a certain creative flair with interrogations.

Dr. M's first involvement with the feien project was the result of his anger over Verine Antipova. When she was bonded to Pavel Antipov, Dr. M felt the feien was an unwanted intruder. Since he could not take it out against her directly due to her closeness with Pavel and her importance as breeding stock, he convinced Pavel to give him several of the confiscated feien from Gaia for experimentation. He later returned from his workshop (the location and contents of which are not known to anyone outside of Dr. M and the Supreme Commander) with discoveries that allowed feien to be brought back from the dead via time displacement, be bred as juveniles, and speed up or delay their growth indefinitely.

Eventually Dr. M forgave Verine for intruding upon his (professional) partnership with Pavel and even took on a feien of his own, Mitrovica. Since then he has reportedly not been working on new feien experiments, though that may be merely because he's switched his research back to the dimensional deconstruction device, a machine designed to reduce all matter in a universe to its component particles."

Some classic Dr. M quotes:

"How do you know I am not a serial killer? Have you ever known a serial killer? Have you ever been a serial killer? Then how do you know what a serial killer would do?"

"Someone is coming. Perhaps you should put me down. If it is Antipov he will be very angry with you."

"I once saw a technique used in a motion picture. The interrogator was a dentist, but, not a very good one. He forgot to use the Novocaine. Heh. Heh."

His eyes are so blank! it's strange that they should cause such an effect. Or, rather, they cause an effect that is strange.
